Parallel to When the Leaves Speak, Farrah Mahmood Rana’s exhibition at MARKK – Museum am Rothenbaum, MOM Art Space presents the group exhibition DOING EARTH رہ ارض پر سرگرم.
The project is part of ECOLOGY OT TRUST, a German Pakistan Art Exchange.

Featuring drawings, paintings, objects, and films by Pakistani women artists, the exhibition explores, through diverse artistic approaches, the performative production of social reality—Doing Earth.

The exhibition is concerned not only with our relationship to nature, the planet, and the landscapes that surround us. Drawing on Judith Butler’s theory of performativity, it understands reality not as something fixed or given, but as something continuously produced through human actions, social relations, and cultural practices. Doing Earth extends this idea to our relationship with the Earth as a shared habitat, asking how we shape, inhabit, appropriate, and attribute meaning to nature, landscapes, and the spaces in which we live.

The works presented offer diverse perspectives on memory, identity, care, and processes of social and climatic change.

Drawing on personal experiences and individual life stories, the artists develop distinctive artistic positions that are deeply connected to the social, cultural, and ecological realities of Pakistan. Biographical experiences and personal reflections are transformed into multifaceted artistic practices that simultaneously raise universal questions about our coexistence on Earth and the living environments we create.

On October 10, NUQTA, a multidisciplinary cultural association dedicated to fostering dialogue through art, will present a Pakistani film screening in dialogue with the works in the exhibition. Bringing cinema into conversation with contemporary miniature art, the event opens a broader perspective on Pakistan’s rich and evolving cultural landscape while creating a space for artistic and cultural exchange between Pakistan and Germany.

The screening brings together filmmakers, visual and performance artists, poets, architects, researchers, journalists, and other creative practitioners whose diverse perspectives engage with questions of society, identity, history, and visibility. By creating connections across artistic disciplines and cultural contexts, the event explores how artistic expression can reveal social realities, challenge established narratives, and bring overlooked voices and perspectives into visibility.
