The primary focus of ‘Tangerines and Herrings’ is to explore the transformations within painting and the processes through which these changes are experienced. It examines the power of associations and suggestions, as well as the torment of decision-making during painting and the trade-offs associated with it.
In non-figurative painting, the goal is to start with nothing and shape this nothing into a functioning image. An artist must remain sensitive enough without the need for narrative. The painting process involves a set of conscious decisions under a constant flood of reactions to the image being created. The outcome of this effort is a series of paintings with printmaking and drawing overtones, supported by audio recordings (or text) that loudly supplement
what happened to the image in a particular moment.”
